Interview with Phi-Phi (At The Villa, Extreme, Boccaccio)
You've been dj'ing for almost 20 years now.
How long are you planning to keep up with the nightlife?
As long as my health allows me and I can continue to find pleasure in mixing. I wish to do the same with my producing-career.
You've played all 'round Europe, and of course in Belgiums most infamous clubs like At The Villa and Extreme.
Do you still have any unfulfilled dreams concerning dj'ing, or have you pretty much accomplished everything?
I’ve witnessed the most beautiful years of electronic music and I can’t wish for more then having lived through that. But, the future will tell...
Who has influenced you most?
Who has influenced me most…. No one in particularly really. I rarely go out, apart from my bookings. UK progressive has influenced me! That I discover each week again when I go shopping for my records.
You've witnessed nightlife evolve over almost two decades. What changes struck you most? Was it really 'the good old times' or has the scene evolved positively?
It was really ‘the good old times’ because back then the people went out to have a party. It was one big happy family. It seems that today that movement is fading away, especially in Belgium. Nevertheless I continue to believe in this music that hasn’t seen its last days just yet.
What are your future plans concerning dj'ing/producing?
I hope to take on a new residency in a Belgian club, ‘cause that’s what I love to do most. As a resident you can follow your public and keep contact with them.
What was your best experience?
When I started out at Boccaccio. That’s when I began to understand the potential of this music. There I really felt that the audience was supporting me.
What was your funniest experience?
That would have to be a party where I had to spin next to Danny Howells. We played a ping pong set: mixing in 3 records each at its turn. We did this for 5 hours! It was superb!
What music do you play at home?
I mostly play ambient music and progressive, depending on the moment...
Are there any upcoming talents you keep an eye on?
Yeah, the new generation is ready, but unfortunately there are less and less clubs where they can express them selves.
Music is...
My life!!
Is there anything more you'd like our readers to know?
Yes, I would like to thank all the clubbers who have followed me during my whole career, who have supported me and who have given me the desire to play cause a dj only exists thanks to his public.
